Kids Cooking Nuts and Seeds

Nuts and seeds are crunchy, yummy snacks, power packed with energy and nutrition. Kids can cook and bake with them to make favorite family recipes or new culinary delights. Most nuts are botanical seeds that grow in fruits and flowers. Shelled raw whole organic nuts and seeds can be stored airtight in a cool dark place for up to 6 months or frozen for storage up to a year. Organic nuts in their shells stay fresh even longer. Kids can choose raw unsalted organic nuts and seeds for cooking and baking and measure by either volume in a measuring cup or by weight on a scale. The deep fragrant flavors and essential oils of nuts and seeds are released when they are toasted. The texture also changes, making the nuts crunchier and crisper. Kids can preheat the oven at 350 degrees and cover a rimmed sheet pan with parchment paper. Sprinkle a single layer of nuts or seeds on the pan and bake for 5 – 10 minutes. Kids can stir them with a wooden spoon every 2 to 3 minutes to ensure even golden browning and watch closely to prevent over browning. When the kitchen fills with a warm, toasty fragrance, kids can take them from the oven, let them cool, and lift the parchment paper to pour the nuts or seeds into the recipe or storage container. The vitamins and minerals in nuts and seeds have made them an ideal snack for thousands of years, but kids can make them shine by toasting and adding them to baked treats or mixing them with spices.
