Kid Chef Pear Date Pecan Pie

Sweet pies with organic fruit, nuts, and brown sugar in a whole wheat pastry crust make any day a holiday.  Kids can make organic 6” pie shells ahead of time and freeze them for a quick treat to share with a friend. Kids can also find three organic 6” pie shells in the frozen food section at Whole Foods.

This organic pie is not only delicious, it is a powerhouse of nutrition. Pears are rich in antioxidants, anti-inflammatory nutrients, fiber, and phytonutrients that help prevent many chronic diseases, and are good for those with food allergies. Dates are a brain healthy food rich in fiber, antioxidants, and vitamins. Pecans are heart healthy, rich in fiber with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits.  

Kids can keep the pie shells in the freezer until the oven is preheated to 375°. In a small bowl, mix 1 sliced pear, 2 chopped organic medjool dates, 2 tbsp organic pecans, 2 tsp organic brown sugar, 1 tsp organic maple syrup, ½ tsp arrowroot starch, and ⅛ tsp cinnamon and put in the refrigerator. When the oven is heated, pour the pear mix into the frozen pie shell and place on a parchment paper covered baking sheet. Bake for 50 minutes and let cool.
